Historic Honomu Town
You will feel as if you are stepping back in time when you explore the unique and historic town of Honomu. Honomu was once a bustling sugar cane plantation town, with a gas station, bar and two theaters! But, since the closing of the sugar cane plantations, this town has slowly turned into a unique place for Hawaii vacationers to visit.
Mr. Eds Bakery
Stop by Mr. Eds Bakery for a sweet treat while in Honomu. This old-school bakery has everything from chocolate covered shortbread cookies, sticky monkey bread, giant cinnamon rolls and over 150 varieties of tropical jams, jellies, and butter. Some interesting combinations from tangy dragonfruit and lime to a creamy purple sweet potato and haupia to a sweet, spicy mango and habanero pepper. This is a great place to pick up a unique Hawaiian flavored jam to bring back home. They also can ship your orders to you, so you don’t have to worry about lugging them back in your luggage.
Akaka Falls State Park
While in Historic Honomu town a must visit spot is Akaka Falls State Park. This is the second most popular place to visit on the Big Island, after the Volcanoes National Park. There is a short 0.4-mile walk over a paved pathway, you will travel through a dense tropical forest that reveals two picturesque waterfalls along the circular route: the 100-foot tall Kahanu Falls and the thunderous Akaka Falls, which plummets 442 feet into the gorge below. The hike will take about 40 minutes to walk through while you take in the lush green forest. This is a great spot for pictures!
Honomu Goat Dairy
Along Akaka Falls road, you will find this cute little goat dairy farm. The friendly owners will great you with a smile and some amazing samples. They have creamy goat cheese, sweet caramels, and fudge — all made locally. The farm also makes some handmade soaps, which would make a great gift! Stop by and visit the cute baby goats as well!
Glass from the Past
This unique little antique shop will take you back in time. Full of historic glass bottles, knickknacks’ and old school Aloha shirts, this is a treasure hunters dream. You will find some historic Hawaiian glass bottles, dishes, and jewelry. This store has been around for years and if you are looking for something special and unique to bring back home, this might be the place to find it.
